Fertilization Recommendations

Sunflower

Sunflower is a crop with specific requirements for nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, which must be met to achieve maximum yield and quality.

1. Base Fertilization (Soil Preparation – Pre-sowing)

Period: Spring – before sowing
Fertilizer Type: Compound NPK (e.g. 15-15-15 or 20-10-10)
Dosage: 40–50 kg/acre
Purpose: Ensure essential nutrients for good root establishment and early growth.

2. Nitrogen Fertilization (After Emergence)

Period: 20–30 days after sowing
Fertilizer Type: Urea or ammonium nitrogen form
Dosage: 15–20 kg/acre
Purpose: Support leaf development and enhance photosynthesis.

3. Fertilization During Seed Formation

Period: Flower development – seed filling
Fertilizer Type: Nitrate nitrogen with potassium (e.g. potassium sulfate)
Dosage: 10–15 kg/acre
Purpose: Improve seed size and quality.

Supplementary Foliar Nutrition

  • Water-soluble NPK fertilizers (e.g. 20-20-20)
  • Trace elements (Boron, Zinc, Iron)
  • Application of foliar sprays at critical stages to prevent deficiencies

Tips:

  • Adequate potassium supply is essential for seed weight and quality.
  • Boron (B) plays a role in fertilization and seed development.
  • Carry out soil and leaf analysis for optimal planning.
  • Avoid excessive nitrogen use near maturity to prevent delays.
